Our next play

Five short plays will be read: (1) "Am I Blue" by Beth Henley; (2) "Protest" by Vaclav Havel; (3) "Bye Bye Brevoort" by Eudora Welty; (4) "Tone Clusters" by Joyce Carol Oates; and (5) "Linda Her" by Harry Kondoleon. A short synopsis of each play is mentioned below.

"Am I Blue" by Beth Henley

John Polk is in a bar waiting for midnight to arrive, when he will turn 18. Yet, although his college buddies have given him a special gift (an appointment with a prostitute) he’s lonely and dissatisfied with his life. Ashbe, a strange 16-year-old girl, enters the bar. At first John wants nothing to do with her, but things change as their conversation continues.

“Protest” by Vaclav Havel

Vanek is a famous writer, imprisoned in the past for his anti-government writings, who tries to convince an old friend (compromised by his close connection to an oppressive government) to sign a petition letter.

“Bye-Bye Brevoort” by Eudora Welty

Three elderly ladies live in the hundred-year-old Hotel Brevoort. They entertain a gentleman caller for tea while the Hotel is demolished around them.

“Tone Clusters” by Joyce Carol Oates

A boy is accused of murdering the daughter of a next-door neighbour. Despite the overwhelming evidence, his parents cannot bring themselves to believe that their son is capable of such a crime. How well do they really know him?

“Linda Her” by Harry Kondoleon

Carol lies awake at night pondering her dissatisfaction with her domestic life – a boring husband and a brat of a daughter.
