Play Reading Monday 13 March

  • 13 Mar 2017
  • 19:15 - 22:00
  • Centrepoint Library, Im Lohnhof 8, 4051 Basel

Our next play reading is on Monday 13 March, at the Centrepoint Library, Im Lohnhof 8, 4051 Basel.  Members and non-members are welcome.

We will read Neil Simon's "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" - a light-hearted comedy with a darker side.

The post-war years in New York City was a golden age - on the surface!  People dressed up for the office, took three-hour lunches, smoked and drank blithely with little thought for the consequences.  But below the surface there was a darker side of sexism, racism and communist witch-hunts.

The play is set in the writers' room of 1950's TV "The Max Prince Show".  The writers on the 23rd floor are constantly coming up with good one-liners for their own amusement and for use in the show.  The show is smart and funny, but it's in trouble: the network wants to cut it from 90 to 60 minutes, and the bosses want to trim the budget by firing one of the writers . . .

You can arrive any time after 7.15pm.  The reading will begin promptly at 7.30pm.  Centrepoint shares its entrance with the Musik Museum and can be found by walking through a church courtyard into a smaller courtyard.  The shared entrance is on the right hand side - then follow the Semi-Circle signs upstairs to the Library.
