Play Reading Monday 3 April

  • 03 Apr 2017
  • 19:00 - 22:00
  • Centrepoint Library, Im Lohnhof 8, 4051 Basel

Our next play reading is on Monday 3 April, 7pm for a 7.30pm start, at the Centrepoint Library, Im Lohnhof 8, 4051 Basel.  Members and non-members are welcome.

We will read "R.U.R" by Czech author and playwright Karel Čapek.

R.U.R. stands for “Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti” or “Rossum’s Universal Robots”.  This play premiered in 1921 and quickly became famous.  By 1923 it had already been translated into about 30 languages.  It introduced the word "robot" into the English language (“roboti” roughly translates as “toil” or “servant”).

Although Čapeks “robots” are not exactly machines as we would understand them today, there are significant parallels to today’s robots, giving cause for reflection.

Although this is a dark play, it is not entirely without hope . . .

You can arrive any time from 7pm.  The reading will begin promptly at 7.30pm.  Centrepoint shares its entrance with the Musik Museum and can be found by walking through a church courtyard into a smaller courtyard.  The shared entrance is on the right hand side - then follow the Semi-Circle signs upstairs to the Library.
