Our next play reading is on Monday 3 July, 7pm for a 7.30pm start, at the Centrepoint Library, Im Lohnhof 8, 4051 Basel. Members and non-members are welcome.
We will read “Antigone” by Sophocles: The powerful story of an idealistic heroine and a tyrant surrounded by sycophantic advisors. Antigone performs burial rites on her brother Polyneices, evoking the wrath of her uncle Creon, who wanted the traitor left to rot in the streets. Creon realises he is becoming unpopular after his drastic punishment of Antigone, but he repents too late. We will read Don Taylor’s translation - produced to acclaim at the National Theatre in 2012 - rather than a dramatised version, so we can sense how the play itself worked on an audience two and a half thousand years ago.
