Autumn Production 2004 - "Arms and the Man" by George Bernard Shaw

Arms and the Man is a classic light comedy by a master playwright. It has been very popular throughout the world under such titles as The Chocolate Soldier and in Switzerland as Der Pralinesoldat. Indeed, the hero of the piece is a Swiss soldier of fortune caught up in the Balkan wars of the late 19th century.
The characters introduced at the start of the play are brought to reassess their romantic ideals as the action unfolds, with many subtle and amusing twists.
Shaw was a life-long Fabian socialist. His trenchant views were often very well concealed within entertaining and well-crafted plays. Here he pillories militarism and the artificial animosities created by military conflict, so giving the play relevance to our present troubled
times.
