Careful Rapture by Jack Popplewell,

Ted Desmond would like to get married, but has a morbid fear of mother-in-laws, who are a necessary accessory to the process. Thus, he has reached middle-age before deciding to marry – a mere teenager. However, he will not confirm the engagement until he has vetted his future mother-in-law.
Surprise: he gets on famously with her and this leads to the inevitable complications of the heart, until all is resolved in the final scene.
